3D Printing
I’ve wanted a 3D printer for about 15 years. The tech always seemed too complicated, I was moving across country and states for work, and the timing never felt right. I spent years watching YouTubers like Zack Freedman and daydreaming about getting an Ender 3 and upgrading it to hell.
Then I saw a video from SuperFastMatt saying “now is the time to get into 3D printing.” And you know what? He was right. It’s finally a solved problem. Plug and play in a way I never thought it would be.
The Setup
Bambu Lab A1
The A1 fit my needs and budget. Got the AMS Lite too, though I don’t use multicolor much since it generates a lot of waste (the “poop” everyone talks about).
The machine is dead simple. Maintenance is basically:
- Occasional lubing
- Wash the build plate with soap
That’s it. Very few failed prints, and the ones that did fail were mostly my fault.
Before the A1
Never owned a printer before this. My cousin and her girlfriend run a 3D printing business (figurines, painting, the whole deal) so when I needed a piece here and there I’d just order from them.
The Dactyl Manuform keyboard build was what finally pushed me over the edge. I knew I’d be doing a lot of back and forth before nailing the final design, and outsourcing every iteration wasn’t going to work.
Favorite Prints
The Dactyl Manuform Keyboard
My pride and joy, even though it’s not done yet. Custom case with OLED housing, rotary encoder mount, analog stick mounts. Printed at 0.08mm layer height in matte black. The whole reason I bought the printer.
AMS Lite 4.0 Rebuild
This project completely rebuilds the AMS Lite into a top-mounted container that looks like the actual AMS. Way easier to swap filaments, cleaner setup, and it was a ton of fun to build. Probably the most useful upgrade I’ve done.
Pokemon Figurines with My Daughter
She got into Pokemon recently, and printing figurines for her to paint has become a hobby we share. Finding the right models, printing them, then watching her paint them. This is the kind of stuff that makes the hobby worth it.
Materials
I keep it simple:
- PLA - 90% of what I print. Easy, reliable, good enough for most things.
- PETG - For car parts that would melt in the sun. Higher heat resistance for anything living in a hot vehicle.
Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Tall + Thin Layers = Disaster
Tried printing an ocarina at super fine layer heights. Complete failure. Reprinted at regular layer heights and it worked fine. Thin layers on tall prints are asking for trouble.
Split Prints to Avoid Supports
A technique I’ve been enjoying is finding creative ways to split prints in two so I can completely avoid supports and waste. All the Pokemon figurines were done this way. Cleaner results, less post-processing.
Don’t Stack OpenGrid Boards
Tried printing multiple OpenGrid boards at once by stacking them. Bad idea. With PLA, the grids stuck to each other. With PETG as interface material, they didn’t stick at all and the whole print failed. Just print them one at a time.
