Hardware
The Arc
Eighth grade. A Pentium-something with 10GB of HDD and 128MB of RAM. GTA Vice City running at a heroic 5fps. Every emulator I could find. That machine introduced me to computers as something you could actually do things with, not just look at.
High school. Dad got us a better one. 80GB HDD, 512MB RAM, still no dedicated GPU. But the onboard graphics could handle GTA San Andreas and emulate GameCube and Nintendo DS. That PC was my entire high school life.
College. A cheap Kelow laptop my dad got me. Kelow sounds like it should be a cereal brand, but I’m genuinely grateful for it. That’s the machine where I first installed Linux. Then upgraded to an Acer, which was a step up.
Scholarship. Part of the funding for studying abroad was earmarked for a computer. That’s when I got my first Avell.
Seven years later. Still on Avell for mobile. First real desktop build.
Current Setup
Desktop
My first proper build. Everything before this was store-bought or a laptop.
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- GPU: Gigabyte RTX 5080
- RAM: 64GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR5
- Motherboard: ASUS B870E-E Gaming WiFi
- Cooler: Peerless Assassin
- Fans: Lian Li wireless LCD
Used for gaming and personal dev work. My current job provides an M3 Mac for work stuff, so the desktop is fully mine.
I care about aesthetics and I’m not ashamed of leaning full gamer. Current setup is black and yellow, RGB all set to match. The KRK Classic 5 studio monitors anchor the color scheme and everything else follows.
Laptop
Avell A70 MOB with RTX 3060 and 32GB RAM. Avell is a Brazilian brand: high performance at an actually reasonable price, and genuinely repairable. Just recently I needed replacement fans that aren’t even listed on their website. Emailed them, they sent a couple for free. Seven years out of the first one before upgrading, and that kind of support is exactly why.
